The 10th Beijing International Art Biennale (BIAB) grandly opens at the turn of the year. This is more than an exhibitionit is a transnational, translingual, and transmedia celebration of art; a cultural meditation on history, the present, and the future; and, above all, an intellectual quest for understanding and resonance through the mutual learning among civilizations.

Themed Coexistence, this years BIAB emerges from artists abiding commitment to harmonious coexistence among people and with the natural world, for they understand deeply that this necessitates, particularly in the face of myriad differences, exchanges and mutual empowerment. While conflict, misunderstanding, and fragmentation continue to challenge our world, we remain steadfast in our belief that art as a universal language requiring no translation possesses an ineffable power to touch the human heart. It connects our most cherished emotions: the yearning for beauty, the desire for love, empathy for suffering, and the unwavering pursuit of a better future. The exhibition gathers masterworks by artists from diverse cultural backgrounds across the globe. Each piece unfolds a unique inner world. Art remains an indispensable, soft yet resilient bond on our journey toward building a community with a shared future for humanity.

Distinct from previous editions, this Biennale not only showcases the enduring brilliance of traditional easel painting but also features striking presentations of contemporary installation, moving image, and digital art. It seeks, with both depth and breadth, to explore the intricate, multilayered, and profoundly nuanced dimensions of human nature and the world around us, striking a chord with viewers that is both surprising and deeply authentic.

A section dedicated to contemporary ink art features an International Exhibition of Contemporary Ink Art. It highlights the richly varied explorations by a new generation of international artists inspired by the tradition of ink painting. Not every experiment automatically secures a place in art history, but our keen interest in and expectation for such explorations precisely reflect confidence in our own culture.

We are at a historic juncture marked by transformative technological advances. The Human-AI Symbiosis: Digital Art Exhibition boldly unleashes the imagination, initiating cross-disciplinary dialogues with scientists and thinkers to interrogate how the luminous essence of human subjectivity might be preserved and extended within the paradigm of I think, therefore I control. Here, art, through its unique sensibility, intuitive insight, and critical spirit, calls on us to engage in sharing and reflection. Its role is irreplaceable.

As in past editions, the Biennale also includes a country-specific exhibition. This year, Serbia takes center stage. We take this opportunity to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Serbia.

Amid the passage of time, artistic remembrance is itself an indelible lesson that we must never forget. Reflecting on history deepens our appreciation of peace. From the artists engagement with both the sublime and the ordinary in our tangible world, there sometimes emanates a beam of warm light. It serves to illuminate the beauty of everyday life, magnify the extraordinary within the mundane, and ultimately forge, through unique forms, a resonant bell that tolls toward the future. As the largest international art biennale in terms of participating countries and regions, the BIAB champions the transformative power of art in elevating the human spirit and igniting profound reflections, and it sounds a clarion call for a shared future of harmonious coexistence among all peoples.
