Wang Zhenghua(China)
Comedy / 2013 / Oil on canvas / 110cm×150cm
Appreciation: It is tough to draw the differences between human figures in a group portrait. Sometimes, the depicting of each character looks just same and formulaic; sometimes, excessively emphasizing can easily create strange and ugly looking. The oil painting, Comedy, by Chinese artist Wang Zhenghua, describes the close-up smile from man, woman, and children in the rural area watching comedy. Each character’s facial modeling and expression are unique, realistic, cordial and intriguing. The painting references the visual effect from Chinese folk wooden lacquer painting, with a background resembles red card sprinkled with gold, enhancing festive color tone and highlighting the joyful facial expression.(Wang Yong)
